PHULBANI/BERHAMPUR: Trained to execute rapid action under any circumstance, the Special Operations Group (SOG)  security personnel of Odisha Police helped an ailing old woman reach the hospital by carrying her on a makeshift stretcher to Gochhapada primary health centre here on Wednesday. They covered the three-kilometre distance on foot.

Sixty-nine-year-old Kapuri Mahar of Labariketa village was suffering from severe health ailments since the past many days. When the SOG jawans came to know about her condition while patrolling in a nearby forest, they volunteered.

Due to poor road connectivity, no ambulance was able to reach the Maoist-infested area and so the jawans carried her to the Gochhapada PHC on foot.  They arranged a vehicle to take the elderly woman to the Phulbani district headquarters hospital. However, the doctors, on observing her health condition, shifted her to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur.

Since Mahar belongs to a poor family, SP Suvendu Kumar Patra directed Kandhamal police to provide Rs 10,000 for the woman’s treatment, besides additional financial assistance.

Odisha: Olive Ridley hatchlings make their way to sea from Rushikulya beach

Berhampur: As dusk descended on the coast near the Rushikulya river mouth in Ganjam district, thousands of baby Olive Ridley sea turtles started to emerge from sandy pits and crawl towards the sea from Saturday night.

Mass hatching of Olive Ridley sea turtles had started in time and was likely to continue for the next four to five days, a forest officer said.

“We are trying our best to ensure the safety of the baby turtles,” said Sunny Khokkar, divisional forest officer (DFO) in Berhampur.

An all-time high 6.37 lakh Olive Ridley sea turtles had laid eggs in a three-km-long stretch from Podampeta to Bateshwar near the river mouth during the eight-day duration of mass nesting from February 23 to March 3 this year.

“As a record number of Olive Ridley sea turtles laid eggs and the weather condition was good, we expect a sizeable number of baby turtles to emerge from the eggs this time,” he said.

Around 100 to 150 eggs are laid by each female turtle during the mass nesting period.

After laying eggs, the turtles return to the sea without waiting to see the baby turtles.

Local people have teamed up with the forest officials to protect the hatchlings, while the forest officials fenced off the area with mosquito nets.

“We have fenced off the entire area to prevent the entry of predators like wild dogs, jackals, hyenas etc,” the DFO said.

Patrolling in the sea beach was also intensified to protect the baby turtles from crows and kites.

He said around 60 forest personnel along with some villagers are in the area to protect the baby turtles.

The volunteers collected some of the hatchlings, who had diverted from their path on the beach, and released them into the sea, the DFO said.

“For the last several years, local volunteers have extended their help to the forest officials to protect the hatchlings,” said Rabindra Sahu, secretary of the Rushikulya sea turtle protection committee.

Congress expels Angkita Dutta days after she alleged harassment by IYC chief

Dutta had levelled a series of allegations against IYC chief Srinivas BV accusing him of "harassing" and "discriminating" against her.

Congress has expelled the chief of Youth Congress’s Assam unit for six years for “anti-party activities”, days after she alleged harassment by Indian Youth Congress (IYC) chief Srinivas BV and secretary in-charge Vardhan Yadav.

"Hon'ble Congress President has expelled Dr. Angkita Dutta, President Assam Pradesh Youth Congress, from the primary membership of the party, for six years, for her anti-party activities, with immediate effect," Congress general secretary Tariq Anwar said in a release.

In a police complaint filed on Wednesday with Assam’s Dispur police station, Angkita Dutta accused Srinivas BV of being “sexist, chauvinistic and outraging a woman’s modesty”. She alleged Srinivas BV has been harassing her, physically and mentally, for six months by making sexist comments and threatening her with consequences if she complained against him to top Congress leaders. “He heckled me holding my arm, pushing and pulling and threatening me using slang words, saying he will ruin my career in the Congress if I complained against him to the high office bearers of the party,” said Dutta’s complaint, a copy of which HT has seen.

BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya tweeted: "This is Congress’s model of women empowerment! Sack the woman who alleged harassment instead of providing a platform to hear her grievances. The manner in which Angkita Dutta has been removed from the Congress is uninspiring for women."

The Congress’s Assam unit had issued a show cause notice to Dutta asking her to explain her conduct despite assurances from party leadership that her grievances would be addressed.

“Dutta has said she has been facing harassment for six months, but she informed Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah about it only two days ago,” said Congress leader Debabrata Saikia, suggesting that the timing of the allegations could be related to assembly polls in Srinivas BV’s home state of Karnataka.

Dutta tweeted on Friday: “Honestly I am aware this could lead to an end of my political career. If this is the price I have to pay, so be it. About me meeting some BJP leader, one is welcome to check CCTV footage of home & office where you will probably see me reading trolls my colleagues are spreading.”

Earlier this week, Srinivas BV sent a criminal defamation notice to Dutta for allegedly using "unparliamentary and defamatory" words against him. In a press statement issued by IYC national media in-charge Varun Pandey, Congress's youth wing accused Dutta of using "utterly unparliamentary, undignified, defamatory, malicious words" against Srinivas BV.

"Dr Dutta has resorted to using utterly unparliamentary, undignified, defamatory, malicious words against Srinivas BV and has levelled totally sexist, chauvinistic, false, frivolous allegations against him. The IYC legal cell has taken a strong, stringent legal action and therefore IYC National President Srinivas BV has sent a Criminal Defamation notice to Dr Angkita Dutta in view of the same," the release stated.
